Solar and Wind Energy for
Delaware
Steven S. Hegedus Ph.D.

Steven Hegedus was born in Cleveland Ohio.  He has been
involved in thin film solar cell research for 25 years.  He received
a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Case Western Reserve
University in 1977 then joined IBM Corporation.  In 1981, he
received a Masters of Engineering degree in Electrical
Engineering from Cornell University where he analyzed thin film
GaAs solar cells..  In 1982, he joined the research staff of the
Institute of Energy Conversion at the University of Delaware.
Initially he was involved in material and device characterization of
amorphous silicon (a-Si) leading to fabrication of the first 10%
efficient a-Si p-i-n solar cell made by a US university.  A Ph.D. in
Electrical Engineering was awarded from University of Delaware in
1990 for characterizing amorphous silicon germanium p-i-n solar
cells using capacitance techniques.  In 1992 he was part of an
interdisciplinary team which evaluated PV applications for demand
side management and dispatchable energy.  Dr. Hegedus was
team leader for 8 years of the a-Si Industry/NREL/University
research team responsible for  Multijunction Devices.  At IEC, he
supervises several students and technicians in the device
characterization group.  His work revolves around analyzing
optical and electrical losses in thin film solar cells especially those
from a-Si or CdTe.  Dr. Hegedus has published over 80 papers in
the field of solar cell device analysis and material
characterization.  He co-edited and contributed to the 1100 page
“Handbook of Photovoltaic Science and Engineering” published in
2003 by John Wiley and Sons, and he is a co-editor of the leading
journal in the field “Progress in Photovoltaics”.  He teaches a
graduate class at UD in Solar Electric Systems. He is the advisor
for the UD student group Students for Environment. He is a
member of Union of Concerned Scientists, American Solar Energy
Society, and the Green Party of Delaware.  Steve has lived in
Newark Delaware for 25 years.
